Working as a Scuba Diving Instructor ? Full time or Part time

Scuba diving instructors that do contract work are in high demand at resorts and dive shops.
This is an easy way of diving for your own pleasure during your free time, and getting paid to dive on the job.

Getting Hired

The process of getting hired as a scuba diving instructor differs with location. There are different types of certification required for diving in protected waters and the open ocean. Your chances of getting hired depend on these certifications and your experience. You must be professional in the way you look, talk and act to the firm you are applying to.

If you are able to sell yourself to the company, then they will be confident you can sell their services to the customers.

Many resorts contract out scuba diving services to independent companies. They offer diving excursion packages to their guests but do not hire their own diving staff. The best thing for a diving instructor to do is contact these independent companies if looking for a job in a resort location. The resorts will be able to supply you with this contact information.

Working as a scuba diving instructor involves work other than diving.

As an employee of a company, you will be expected to load gear, talk to the customers, and sell excursions or trips. The lives of the customers will be in your hands while diving, so it is important that you adhere to strict regulations and keep up to date with first aid and life saving technologies.

The issue of liability insurance is usually the concern of the company who hires you. However, check this out before you accept a position, because you may have to provide your own insurance coverage.

Job Hints

There are a few tips to keep in mind if your life's ambition is to be a scuba diving instructor. Each country requires work permits and visas in order to enter the country and to be able to work there. Keep this in mind before you accept a job and then find that you are working illegally.

Other tips:

Keep smiling no matter what the customers say to you.
Fine-tune your sales skills.
Make sure that you are always on time for work.
Learn to speak the language of the country.
Don't party too much the night before you have to work.
Keep your work visa current.
Make sure you have a passport.
Know the area.
Consider doing your training at a site where you would like to work.
Get experience.
Keep your medical insurance current.
Watch everyone in your group, even those who seem to know what they are doing.

At a Local Dive Shop

Local dive shops regularly hire extra scuba diving instructors during their busy season.

This is because resorts often contract their diving excursions to the local dive shops in the area. If you do not get a job as a scuba diving instructor, you might be able to work behind the counter, check the equipment or even wash or load the vans. Either way, you can dive in your spare time and still be paid to work in the diving industry.
"Want ? Ads" For Dive Instructors
a. Diving magazines offer a classified section where ads for scuba diving instructors are placed from all over the world. Salaries are generally low and the work required is often minimal ? two to three hours each morning. This leaves you free to do your own scuba diving for the rest of the day.

b. You can also split your work year into two sections depending on your regular job. If you have a trade or profession that allows you to do contract work, then you can spend six months working in the diving industry and six months working at your regular job.

c. Search the Internet for classified ads, which advertise jobs for resorts. Use a search engine to search for diving jobs or jobs for diving instructors. You may have to try several variations to get different information.

On a Cruise Ship
There are a variety of jobs available on cruise ships if you have expertise in a specific field. Cruise ships, often called floating hotels, cater to many rich and famous personalities who love to be pampered or learn a new skill.

Some of the jobs you can get on a cruise ship are:
